The DeKalb County School District’s (DCSD) Towers Titans track teams brought home seven gold medals while qualifying 10 (5 boys, 5 girls) for the Class 2A State Track Sectional B at Gordon Central High in Calhoun on Saturday, May 1.
Towers Jamelia Simmons was on top of her game at the Region 6-2A Track and Field Championships bringing home four gold medals. Simmons won the 200-meter dash (25.97), 400-meter dash (58.49), long jump (17-03.50) and triple jump (36-06.00) to lead the way for the Lady Titans.
Catherine Forbes captured three medals on the day finishing second in the 100 (12.807), third in the 200 (26.70) and third in the triple jump (35-06.00). Janiya Reid also picked up a bronze in the 100-meter hurdles (18.12). Sylvannah Davis also qualified with a fourth place finish in the discus (63-08.00) and Serenity Harry made it in with a fourth place in the 100 (12.91).
Towers also picked up a qualifying place by taking third in the 4×100-meter relay (51.18) as the squad finished fourth overall with 95 points.
Region 6-2A Boys
The Titans collected eight medals (3 gold) on the way to qualifying five individuals for the sectional and finishing third in the Region 6-2A Boys Track and Field Championships held recently at Pace Academy’s Riverview Complex.
Daeshaun Logan won the high jump with a leap of 6-04.00 to bring home one of the gold medals and teammate Eric Lewis won the long jump (21-11.00).
Quandarius Patrick collected a sliver in the 110-meter hurdles (15.98) and a bronze in the triple jump (42-04.50). Elijah Hobson finished second in the long jump (21-09.00) behind Lewis.
The 4×100-meter relay team captured gold in its event with a time of 42.72 to round out the gold medal haul. The 4×400 relay collected a silver medal with a time of 3:21.97 and the 4×800 relay group picked up a bronze in 8:50.41.
Columbia’s Jaurice Hardrick grabbed gold in the triple jump (44-04.00) and a bronze in the long jump (21-00.00) to qualify for the sectional in both events.
