DEKALB COUNTY, GA–Two men have been convicted and sentenced for their involvement in a shootout at the Mall At Stonecrest that led to a 26-year-old man’s death, District Attorney Sherry Boston’s office announced. ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA– Rockdale County has been awarded a $145,000 federal grant to establish a  meditation garden for citizens to experience yoga, sound therapy, and other holistic therapy, as well as a demonstration garden for children to learn about agriculture. ATLANTA—With temperatures expected to soar to 100 degrees this weekend in the metro Atlanta area, officials are announcing the opening of cooling shelters to help people beat the heat.  They’re providing water to ensure people stay hydrated. The City of Atlanta will open a cooling center on Saturday, June 15, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.  and Sunday, June 16, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The cooling center will be located at Selena Butler Park and Recreation Center, 98 WM Holmes Borders Drive SE, Atlanta. DEKALB COUNTY, GA-The DeKalb County Schools District (DCSD) today announced a new partnership with the Georgia Aquarium to  provide K-12 students the opportunity to explore marine science. The Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics  (STEM) initiative is one that also will help students better understand socio-environmental issues affecting their communities. The DeKalb Board of Education approved a Memorandum of Understanding(  MOU) with the Georgia Aquarium at the board’s June 10 meeting. The MOU partnership runs July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. DEKALB COUNTY, GA – The DeKalb County Governing Authority announced its intention to increase 2024 property taxes this year by 11.08 percent over the rollback millage rate. DeKalb County has six separate tax levies. Two of those levies (the general and hospital funds) are used in the required calculation for the rollback rate. The other tax levies (police, fire, designated, and the special tax district bond fund), when combined with the general and hospital levies, produce the same benchmark millage rate of 20.810 mills from last year.
